Frequently asked questions about Key Club

Key Club? What's that??? You guys make keys or something? 🤔

So, what exactly is Key Club, and why should I join?

Key Club is an international community-service-oriented organization, with clubs offered in over 5,000 high schools in 40 countries. You will have the opportunity to participate in various fun events and service projects with your fellow Key Clubbers year-round, earning tons of service hours for all that you do! You can also earn graduation cords*, and even scholarships if you're a dedicated Key Clubber! See what we're all about!

Learn more by looking through the official Key Club Member Handbook in our "Important Documents" page and at https://www.keyclub.org/about/

*The requirements for graduation cords are subject to change; check our documentation for more information.

How do I join Key Club? How much does it cost?

All you need to do is attend our interest meeting at the beginning of the school year and pay your dues by the deadline. Stay tuned for more info by following us on social media (see our homepage for links) or periodically check our "Events & Newsletters" page.

Club dues (Typically around $35-$40 cash) include membership fees, your Key Club T-shirt, and Key Club member card, along with other costs necessary to keep Key Club International up and running. Don't worry, you'll have time to pay! We'll accept dues until the deadline, which will typically be about a month or two after the interest meeting.

NOTE: If paying your club dues on time happens to be a financial issue for whatever reason, please don't hesitate to let us know (before the deadline please) - we'd be happy to help in any way we (reasonably) can!

We're always available if you need to reach out!

How often does Key Club meet? Where does Key Club meet? How long are Key Club meetings? What happens at Key Club meetings?

Typically, general meetings will take place every other Wednesday (twice per month) in Mrs. Collins' room (room 147A; the "Student Government Association" room outside by the bus loop).

They usually last about an hour, starting with an icebreaker (some sort of fun group activity we all participate in such as Four Corners, Two Truths and a Lie, Telephone, name games, etc.), then moving on to the informational portion of the meeting. Afterwards, we will usually have a service project, which will last about another hour.

NOTE: As with any other extracurricular, you will need your own transportation home from school after Key Club meetings. SPHS also offers activity buses which will drop you off at the nearest elementary school to your home. Visit Mr. Hankerson (non-magnet) or Mrs. Miller (magnet) for more information.

How much time commitment is required if I join Key Club? What would my schedule look like?

Key Club requires a moderate amount of time commitment, with regular attendance at general meetings, service projects, DCMs (see below), and other routine events (wherever possible) being core aspects of Key Club. As someone who is moderately involved in Key Club, you could expect to stay after school every other Wednesday for approximately two hours (meeting + service project), as well as attend various fun and interesting events on weekends once or twice a month.

Of course, you're still free to be in other clubs and live your life - you're not being held prisoner! However, please keep in mind that in order to remain in good standing in Key Club, you must be an active member by regularly attending meetings and events! When you join Key Club, it's up to you to be a part of it!

Also, if you meet certain yearly criteria for two of your years in Key Club, you will be eligible to earn honor cords at graduation! (The two years can be nonconsecutive; i.e., you may meet the criteria in both 9th and 12th grade, but not 10th and 11th, and still get the honor cords - Learn more)

What are DCMs?

Glad you asked! DCMs, short for Divisional Council Meetings, are essentially short conventions of Key Clubs from local schools in our division (Division 24A), and sometimes nearby divisions. They'll usually take place on a Saturday or other non-school day, in-person at a specified location within Broward County (we always announce where it'll be; no guesswork to be done!)

DCMs involve group collaboration, snacks (usually pizza), fun games, and a short service project to earn a few service hours! There is typically one DCM per month, and as many as possible should be attended in order to remain in good standing.

Does it matter what grade I'm in?

Anyone attending South Plantation High School is welcome to join Key Club at the beginning of the school year, regardless of what grade you're in!

How do I see how many service hours I've accumulated?

Unfortunately, there is currently no centralized digital system in place to view your total hours for only Key Club - you'll need to keep track of your own hours, following our service hour process for all Key Club events.

However, you may view all hours you have accumulated throughout high school by visiting the "Graduation Information" section in Virtual Counselor at: https://bcps.browardschools.com/VirtualCounselor/bsvc/loginstudent.asp

PLEASE NOTE THAT VIRTUAL COUNSELOR DISPLAYS ALL SERVICE HOURS, NOT JUST THOSE FOR KEY CLUB!
